Some more loading alternatives for the 30-25 WSSM / 3 maybe?

Postby Zooka » Thu Mar 08, 2012 9:01 pm

I am bringing this from the thread on "ripped away barrel extensions", as we were wandering from that subject into loads for the 30-25 WSSM and 300 OSSM. . YZ and i were discussing loads and such for the D-tech 30-25.

YZ, Honestly, I have had little luck with 165 grainers in the 30 WSSM / 300 OSSM range from my 22" barrel. 150s and 180s do pretty well, but the 165s seem to be in the wrong spot for a top-performance node. That is why I had to slow that one 165 down so much. But there are plenty of combos that I have NOT tried, that is for SURE!
Looking back at Oly's initial load data took me back to the loading program for some machine theorized experimentations.
I am looking more and more at the 125 gr. Nosler BT , has decent BC of upper 360s and out of the 308 caliber WSSM is not very long; your 165 gr. SST Interbond is 1.27 inches long and the 125 gr. Nosler is only 1.072". A whole raft of powders predict in QL to bring that little awesome slug to greatness. Not only a 22" OBT node, but velocity approaching or exceeding 3200 fps. in proper conditions. Here are some of the powders that look to be able to achieve that range and node: W748, H335, TAC, X-Terminator, Accurate 2460, RL-10X, Acc 2230, and H322. You will note these are pretty fast powders for that short fat case but..... it looks to work.

If you just want to chuck 150 grainers, using a temp-comped, extruded powder, it's hard to beat ATK AR-Comp. It's curve matches up very well with the WSSM case. It's rated from -20 to +140 F with only a 20fps change and it was the only extruded powder I could get the 300 OSSM and 150gr bullet to break the 3k fps barrier without issues.

I left my Chronograph at my folks and really do need to get it back again. I was hoping to get 165s to shoot, but if they won't (which is entirely possible) I am going to try some of the tough 150's. I won't be taking any shots at game for quite awhile with it so I have some time to play with it. Basically I love to tinker with things and I am hoping this will pay off for me. I do have to say a big thanks to both of you since you guys did a lot of leg work that gives me some nice starting places.

YZ, the Sierra 165 grain Game Kings fit the cartridge, do well at lower (less than max ) loads, and they come in the hollow tip and the soft point, and both have pretty good BCs for hunting rounds. Check em out! And you cant go wrong with a Nosler Partition 150 either, up to even elk.

Yeah elk is kind of what I dream of eventually taking with it. I plan on moving back to WY this summer so once back there I will have a much better chance at that. I have been thinkink partition, accubond, or interbond if I go with the 150's. I am using one of the mags from C-Bass but may try an UMAR lower sometime too.
