rebarrel my OSSM ?

Postby 40 rod » Sun Nov 11, 2012 12:18 pm

I have been playing with my .300 gamestalker for 2 years now and still have not found a reliable MOA load. I am starting to think I should have it re-barreled to a bull barreled 243wssm . Anybody have an opinion or comment ?

If it's taken you that long and you still haven't found a reliable hand load, or seen MOA out of the factory ammo, you should have sent it back for repair/exchange.

I would ... and I'd really consider the 25WSSM too! :thumbs up:

There is not much difference between the 243 and the 25 , better selection of bullets for the 243 bigger bullets for 25. What is the more popular? Or 30 years from now what would more apt to be in stock as factory ammo?

Thank you. I still have some ammo to shoot up and maybe a few more experiments with the 300 , but i think there is a 243wssm in my future.

if it we're me; I’d sell the remaining ammo off with the 300/OSSM barrel; as you might stand a better chance of recouping some of the investment that way … just a thought is all.

Despite having complete confidence in my own reloads . It is my policy to not buy or sell homerolled ammo.

Here is a wild idea, since it is now possible to get an UMAR 22-250 how about an exotic wildcat based on the 22-250 but necked up to take a .257 bullet?
Id bet that it would push an 87gr slug to at least 3000fps.

That one pretty much baffled me. Why would you want to waste the capabilities of the UMAR on a "wildcat" when the 25WSSM would dominate it?
In my opinion, the ONLY reason the UMAR is going to be popular is because traditionalists cant get past the 22-250 as "the best coyote caliber in the universe"

In Cartridges of the World (12th edition) for the 250/3000 Ackley improved. Ackley claims 3200 fps with a 100gr bullet.

Such a chambering in an UMAR should be able to digest factory 250savage either single loaded or after a trip through a seating die set to 2.38. The ackley shoulder should provide enough case capacpity to come close to the 25wssm and the reloads will not fit in the 100 year old rifles so there should be no reason not to load them up to modern AR pressures.
So whats not to love about that :?:

OK after playing devils advocate to the idea the wssm wins, because it has been proven already, and a 22-250AI will need a new bolt and custom magazines, there may be issues with overall length with high BC bullets .
It just seems that there is an arms race going on with the goal of a .243 winchester class round in an AR15 platform. ( 6.5 grendel, 68spec, 6x68, ect..ect..) most of them are destined to become orphans .
