10mm Oly Upper

Postby Caradepau » Thu Feb 23, 2017 7:14 am

Hello All.

Can an Oly 10mm upper be used with hot ammo?

I have a 10mm upper but never shot it with hot ammo like underwood.

Since Oly is shutting down soon, I'm considering using my Oly upper on a glock 45/10mm lower.
Not sure if it can be done.

I know circle 10 has glock "large caliber" lowers, for 45 and 10mm glock mags. I've seen glock 10mm BCGs but difficult to obtain (on order is what I always see).

Even on the circle 10 website, you can purchase a glock 45/10 mm lower (they even have a dedicated 10mm upper) but no BCG.

Seems like its a fairy tail for that setup. Too bad if it is..

Glock lower in pistol cal is superb (at least my 9mm Oly glock AR is).

I use to own a K9 (9mm) and I shot some +P on it … but I’m not sure about the 10mm

I’ve never shot any Underwood® Ammo

I kinda doubt it … what Brand® is the 45/10mm Glock® lower? ... QuarterCircle10®?

I was looking at my 9mm Oly last night.

I've not fired it a lot. Last time was about 1 month ago. And I did not clean it. I wanted to see how many rounds would (if it could) fail due to fouling. I fired about 100 rounds last time I used my rifle, Federal ammo, standard 115 grain stuff.

I saw a lot of "grit", like large pieces (about three times the size of sand grains of some metal, looked golden in color). Not sure what it was.
I have never seen that in any of my pistols, rifles before. It almost looks like metal being chipped away.

The BCG, charging handle, upper receiver all had this "gritty" metallic sand coating.

The rifle, even though I've had it since about May of 2015 has not been fired a lot. Maybe 200 rounds total.

I keep it oiled, never fired it prior to cleaning it when received from Oly.

I had actually used gun grease on the BCG and internally within the upper receiver (a light coat, thinking grease stays put, oil flys off and or evaporates eventually). I've done this with other rifles, no issues, just a tad bit more difficult to clean.

This is an Oly built rifle. So the aspect of buffer and buffer spring, using a buffer spacer or not, broken bolt hold due to improper setup, intermittent or bad cycling; non of that should apply here.

It uses the original Oly parts, except the car stock was replaced, still using the original buffer tube, spring and buffer.

The rifle runs buttery smooth, when manually racking through a magazine to when actually firing it. Never had FTF, FTE, when doing either.

I'm hoping this is a "breaking in" thing.

That "Golden Grit" is un-burned or partially burned gunpowder. Ball powder in particular will often do that.

yup, especially prevalent with a 'Blow-Back' AR15 configuration upper-halve ... it's just the nature of that beast

OK.
Thanks for that feedback. I feel so much better now.

I was at the crossroads as to what to do for my Oly K9 Glock and 10mm upper, what spare parts to order by today's end.

With this info you guys provided, I'm gonna roll the dice now, go on the cheap, not worry about a spare the BCG or bolt, just focusing on spare extractor and their ejector spring kit (normal common stuff).

I was told by Nolan of Oly a few years ago, their firing pins are standard AR 15, nothing different.

Even the buffer, when I compared it to my bushy buffer, it is same length, looks to be same diameter too. Not too sure about that spring though, if it's stiffer or what.

If my Oly breaks and cannot be repaired due to high cost and or propitiatory parts being unavailable. Oh well.

I was originally gonna order a complete upper in both 9 and 10mm, but if Oly is shutting down and those new spare parts have issues, I'm stuck with them (and about 700 bucks each too), no warranty I'd imagine would exist (even if new owners take over, nothing has been stated about any warranties of recently or past purchased parts/rifles/pistols after the sale of Oly, if that is still going to occur).
