9mm upper build

Postby John A. » Sun Jul 12, 2015 7:53 am

I recently had a wild hair to add a 9mm upper to my collection. Seeing how I have many other 9mm guns, I didn't really see the "need" to build one, it was more because I just wanted to because I had never done a pistol cal AR before.

So, I dove into all the information out there, and weeded out the useless bulk of it, and I chose my parts to suit me.

Long story short, I started out with a Palmetto State 10.5" nitride barreled upper, and ramped bolt. I am a big fan of nitride treated parts, and the complete upper was less than $320 delivered.

I quickly removed the front sight post (blowback--unnecessary), removed the delta nut assembly and round handguards, and installed an inexpensive keymod freefloated upper that I got from amazon of all places. (I must say, I liked this handguard tremendously). Especially since the cost was about $60.

The SBR lower already had a Superior Shooting brand flat coil buffer spring in it so there was no need to change it, and I used a psa 9mm buffer.

Added a set of KNS antirotational pins to protect the registered lower from any undue battering from the blowback action, and used an AMM Arms 9mm bottom installed magblock that accommodates colt style mags, though since I already had an uzi, I modified a few uzi mags to use in it.

Unfortunately, I had to do some serious hand fitting to get the AMM Arms mag block to fit in my lower. It was far too tight side to side and I had to grind a considerable amount to get it to slide into the magwell.

After firing a few rounds and adjusting the elevation of the mag block, it runs really well. After adding a thread adapter from the goofy 1/2-36 Colt barrel threading spec, is sounds exceptionally well when suppressed with 147 gr bullets. Volume and sound wise, is comparable to when I shoot my MP5K suppressed.

And I know. Pics or it didn't happen.
