Key holing

Postby mechanic » Thu Oct 20, 2016 8:33 am

Last trip to the range found a lot of key holing. Used two 45's a 4 and a 5 inch and results were the same. Almost any distance looked the same even though 50 foot groups where not too bad. Both guns with low ammo count and cleaned the same way. It looks like the ammo was to blame, is it possible for the batch to be over or under charged and cause this instability? This was Winchester white box and I didn't have any other ammo with me at the time to compare it with. About 20% key holed. Any ideas guys?

interesting ... so what type/brand/style of pistols were you shooting when this occurred? and was this the first time that this has happened with this (these) handguns?

I still think it might have ben the ammo. 2 shooters and traded guns in the middle and found no change. 1 Springfield 1911 light operator and 1 HK USP. So far only one range did I see this so I'm not worried yet just wondered if anyone else has seen a stability issue with some ammo? Maybe their is another reason I'm not thinking of!

Crown and muzzle uniformity is always the first suspect, I have never had issues with Winchester White Box ball, and while it can't be ruled out, check the muzzles first. Those .45 tubes are thin and can be bent or deformed more easily than most folks realize.
