Barrel Wear

Postby FatStrat2006 » Sat Nov 19, 2016 12:05 pm

The barrel on my CAR-AR is pretty worn. It's a 16" pencil barrel with the marking SS-5.56 on the top in front of the sight. I measured 1.120" of leade before the bullet catches the rifling. I think this is causing some short stroking or at least contributing to it. It's got eleventy billion rounds through it so I'm not complaining, but what is the service limit for the freebore measurement? It looks like my choices for a replacement are Cr-Mo ARB16 or ARB-CAR. "Ordinary" SP1 profile barrels are ridiculous money for some reason and SS are special order.

Q: what type or brand of ammunition are using? ... primarily?

I’m still Google’ing this question … I’ll report back if I find anything

The barrel on my dissipator measures 0.122" for comparison.

The measurement is with a Hornady OAL gauge, modified.223 case, and a 55g Hornady fmjbt projectile. Zeroed at 2.220" OAL and measured OAL at contact with rifling.

I got off my butt and ordered a new ARB-CAR barrel this morning. Sorry to hear Oly is closing, but my old SGW will have a fresh OEM pipe from the factory and carry on their name for many more years.

The new barrel showed up and I installed it with no problems. It's a fat .750" vs. the .625" diameter of the old one. It's fine, I'm happy with it and glad I kept this old gun all together with factory parts.

awesome ... and yeah, I've had my eye out for an un-molested SGW carbine for years now; but most of them are parted out, and the lower sold off to someone that lives behind the iron curtain and/or a communist state
