Bear Hunting extended in KY

Postby John A. » Sat Mar 31, 2012 3:21 pm

As stated, Bear hunting has been extended in KY.

It doesn't help much, but maybe it will instill fear of humans back into the bears. A lot of these bears have never been hunted, and thus, do not have a natural fear of humans, and therefore, that is bad for the bears and us people who have to live with them on a daily basis.

edit: since the board settings are still cutting off the right side, I provided a link to view the entire article instead of cutting off the far right paragraph.

Better than nothing.

I would still like a week long Spring, fall, or summer hunt. All this crap near Christmas when they're denning is nothing more than hand service.

My next door neighbors car was scratched from one end to the other today. I couldn't help but laugh out loud when the neighbor called them.

Yes, Mr. Game Warden, there are bear tracks on the car.

On the hood.

Yes sir, I did say on the hood of the car.

And on the fender,

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n33/ ... 443fc2.jpg

and on the side windows where it peeked inside to see if there was anything to munch.

Just for what it's worth, the car is parked underneath of a covered car port, so that means the bear was inside to have done that.

I saw it this evening. He was young. Maybe 150 #, and his ear did have an orange tag in it.

Far as I'm concerned, they're all nuisances.

KY is going to have an October archery season this year.

Too late in my opinion. They're already over populated terribly.

I was getting over 100 pictures of deer a day of both bucks and doe, and now I got 8 EIGHT pictures of deer this whole week and the rest were bears.

They've destroyed my deer season.

And for what it's worth, fishing in the rivers and lakes is pretty much shut down too. Not enough water or the water is too hot. That said, the pink salmon run in the bays this year is a whopper, and the fishermen are killing the pinks - everyone's limiting out in just a couple of hours.

Here in WV the bear are becoming a big headache. We had to shutdown the airport for bears on the runway not too long ago. The towns here are having more sightings of bear in their neighborhoods than I've ever seen. Bridgeport, WV had to make an ordinance against feeding the deer and bears because they're hard to get rid of once all the soccor moms start feeding them. Last year there was a hunt put on by Bridgeport within the city limits. Archery only and by permit. There was a huge, beautiful 12 point hit by a car and killed right in front of the police station a couple years ago. Right in the middle of downtown. It's rediculous. We have more deer and bears than people in this state. There are tens of thousands of deer killed every year but it seems like the population is growing at a rapid pace. I think we need to start exporting them out west, you want some GM?

we could use the increased population in both Deer and Bear; as your only allowed to harvest(1) Deer per season here; and there are many States that allow you to harvest 3-5 per season, and some State even more.

I usually only try to harvest one deer because I/we don't eat more than that. KY allows several more though between archery, black powder, modern rifle, etc (I think 3 or 4 altogether, but like I said, I'm not sure exactly how many because I only try to get one.)

Back around 100 years ago, the bear were hunted to extinction and only 25 years or so ago they started making a comeback and the state slapped them with protected status, thus giving them more rights than humans have.

I hate the good for nothing things. I wish we had none of them. Nada, zilch, poof/gone.

I know this is going to sound unbelievable but here in WV we have an annual bag limit of 17 deer.

3 for archery and crossbow
2 for buck firearm
3 for antlerless firearm
2 for muzzleloader
7 for "Special Urban Archery Permit" for incorporated cities, towns, villages and homeowners associations

That'll give you an idea how bad the problem really is. I was kinda suprised myself once I started looking too.

Annual bag limit for bear is only 2 but there have been talks of increasing it.
